In an effort to rejuvenate tourism in Wayanad after the recent devastating landslide, Kerala’s tourism department is collaborating with social media influencers from southern Indian states to promote the scenic hill district.
The campaign, titled “It’s Kerala Season,” aims to attract visitors back to Wayanad, which had suffered significant booking cancellations due to negative publicity following the landslide. Kerala’s Tourism Minister, PA Mohammed Riyas, spearheaded the initiative by engaging with vloggers and bloggers, discussing strategies to restore Wayanad’s image as a prime tourist destination.
Wayanad, once a thriving hub for travelers, witnessed a sharp decline in tourist inflow after the natural disaster. The district, known for its cool weather, adventure tourism, and cultural heritage, had faced challenges in recent months. With its vast potential, the district was part of the “Safe Kerala” campaign post-COVID-19, helping it emerge as a favored destination.
As part of the efforts to boost tourism, the Kerala government will organize a “Tribal Cultural Festival” this year, showcasing the district’s unique ethnic and cultural heritage. The event aims to highlight Wayanad’s rich traditions and diverse offerings, further enhancing its appeal to both domestic and international visitors.
In recent years, Wayanad’s popularity surged due to aggressive government campaigns, with weekends often witnessing a shortage of accommodations due to high demand. However, the landslide and its aftermath caused a downturn in tourist numbers. Now, with renewed efforts, the government plans to implement several campaigns to attract visitors back to Wayanad, ensuring the district’s return to its former glory.
By harnessing the power of social media and emphasizing the district’s unique attributes, Kerala hopes to revive Wayanad’s tourism industry and encourage travelers to once again explore this picturesque destination.
